What To Buy With $150 at Target

I am not well versed on the school calendar. There are days off that come off as a surprise, until maybe the week before, despite the school sending me the calendar the year prior. Hopefully, enriching activities occur on these days, but a lot of my poor planning must encompass the mundane. We are currently having one of those days, and have zero bread in the house, but an entire stick of Trader Joe’s butter with brown sugar and maple. Clearly, we have an issue.

My youngest was born with the shopping gene. I have celebrated this over the years, but lately we have butt heads over the duration of time spent in the toy aisles. I feel that our relationship is stronger when clear boundaries are set ahead of our shopping trips. This was our conversation today:

Me: I need to get bread at Target.

Tiny: I want to come with you.

Me: I am not going to the toy aisles.

Tiny: I am out of Nerf bullets.

Me: Ok, but you need to bring your own money for them. We can get bread and Nerf bullets, but that is it.

Tiny: The Christmas decorations are out.

Me: Ok, bread, Nerf bullets and the Christmas aisle. If you argue when we get there, I can’t take you anymore.

I brushed my teeth, thought hair brushing was unnecessary based on my knowledge of how uncrowded it usually is at 9 am, and got dressed. I wore an exercise bra to remind myself of my daily goals, noticed a small stain on my tee and set a mental note to check the white tee options to replace, and Tiny and I set off.

Oh my, Target has been hit with their daily/weekly/seasonal delivery and it was beautiful to my eyes. The white tee aisle had been the inspiration for my cart direction, but it no longer mattered when the holiday selection hit my eyeballs. I had used my most sanctimonious, motherly righteousness tone of voice with my child before we left, and I was instantly reminded of what it felt like to hit the toy aisle. After 30 minutes and a chunk of time spent on the dressing room bench, my child asked me if I remembered we needed bread. I had, but I needed to look at more aisles.

Target is running 30% off through Saturday on apparel, not including athletic wear. I firmly believe in a wardrobe of good mix and match basic pieces, so how could I not add a chartreuse, satin, tulip dress into the daily mix at 30% off? I couldn’t and a little eye rolling from my husband challenged me to make multiple use options out of it. I told my husband I could wear this to a party, church/brunch/art galleries-that-I-don’t attend-but-might-someday, and work. For reference, I live in LA, and we don’t wear suits. I can pull from my every day and make this happen. Also, there are fantastic pieces aside from my chartreuse lovely. Here is how to spend $150 and get a good wardrobe bang for your buck. Choose one dress, one top, the leggings, one sweatshirt and the shoes and your grand subtotal should be around $130. These are options to add some sparkle and movement to your wardrobe.

Here she is. She is beautiful and so high style for a mere $26.60. She has a touch of sexy with the corset style bodice, but so demure and playful with the tulip midi skirt. For reference, Target calls this color yellow, but I see chartreuse. Tomato, tomahto.

I love a thin black turtleneck as a building block, and used it here. It accents the corset bodice for femininity without the sexy, and black tights continue to support the dress as the exhibition piece.

I would also wear this to work with a crisp poplin button down shirt, navy or burgundy tights (with the opposite color heel) and top it with a cropped denim jacket. Embrace the opposites! Wear it. How often can you rock chartreuse? Is it scary? We are basically in the Christmas season; channel the merry.

The shape doesn’t work for you, but you can’t live without chartreuse? Here you go. The slip silhouette is in fashion right now and you can wear a regular bra with this one. Look at the lace sleeve!! Thank goodness for my short torso, or I would have had to buy both dresses. Please dress it down with a moto boot. Are you chilly? Put a black, oversized cardigan with the boots. Opposites attract.

Sometimes you just don’t want to think about the minutia. If I have to pack for work, packing jewelry ahead of time just frustrates me. What if I change my mind? What if it’s too early to deal and I’m already cranky about being awake and don’t want to wear jewelry? These. Just these. You have button down options for work into holiday party wear, and I am here for it. My favorite part is the button option; choose traditional or asymmetrical. The fabrication is crisp, and the bling is on the front only, so don’t worry about scraping your car seat or spending the day irritated with small beads rubbing uncomfortably every time you lean into your chair. No jewelry necessary with these tops.

Recently, I finished a good and fulfilling work trip. The subtitle to this means that I had errands to run once home. While I like to dress for the day, I have found that if I wear workout clothing, I am 4000% more likely to exercise. (It’s scientific.) I dressed in my Lululemon Align leggings (pretty much the only ones I’ve worn for the last 3 years) and hit every place in town. I came home and Tiny 1 said he could see my butt. What??? This isn’t the first time either. I SQUATTED IN COSTCO IN THESE!!! Ugh.

Enter the every day soft leggings at Target. They feel the same, launder the same and are $25. Lululemon has officially lost my business.

I think a cropped and kind of oversized sweatshirt is flattering with workout leggings, and sets are a thing right now. I’m not so concerned about the set factor, but I like to wear my giant headphones in and out of the gym, and the quarter zip allows me to do this without getting stuck in the sweatshirt while taking them on and off. Both of these are a dupe for major labels, but only $25-30.

This shoe is on sale for $21! I love everything about it. Here is what you wear with the tulip dress from above. Perfect, perfect, perfect! The shape is gorgeous, the heel is practical and the nude with sparkle is screaming to also be worn with a barrel jean and one of the above button down shirts. Just get it–in a size smaller than you usually wear.

We made it home from Target with the bread, Nerf bullets, Christmas wrapping paper, my new dress and several other grocery items. I was excited to steam and try my dress on, and my tiny one was excited to sneak up on his brother. (The toy and bullets were confiscated within the hour.) We rode bikes and I flinched playing catch with a football with my not so tiny 1st born. My neighbor told me to stop throwing it like a baseball, which I can’t. We ended the day watching “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and I realized that the mundane was a great day. When they went off to bed, I had to grab my little computer to share all the wonderful things I found in my Target toy aisle.

It’s Time To Leave the House

I have worn the same pair of joggers for the past 13 months, roughly 5 days out of the week. I figure the other 2 days of the week have averaged “jammies” with a loose pant thrown into the mix very once in a while. I have enjoyed the loose pant year quite a bit! The down side to this has been not really noticing the Covid pounds slowly jumping into the joggers with me. I have mostly only myself to blame, but there have been actual bumps in the road that have put a hitch in my giddy up. I hit a sidewalk crack while running in October, and (after checking to see if anyone saw) realized I cut my hand open and tore a calf muscle. 6 weeks later, the day after I got out of the calf boot, I tore my shoulder labrum in an excited effort to lift weights again. I am out of the shoulder sling and in a fashion pickle now that it is time to leave the house and meet the world again.

With everything that has happened in the world over the last year, this is a no big deal. I realize this, but it is exciting to have the opportunity to open my closet door again. It is not exciting, however, for everything to be really tight. I refuse to buy bigger sizes and want to look well put together, but how? I have grown quite fond of the feel of stretchy pants and a tight jean waist seems unreasonable. I am choosing to skip the 2021 trends and stick with streamlined classics. My leaving-the-house wardrobe consists of a fitted denim jacket, trench coat, dark jeans with a lot of stretch, stretchy pants in a dressier silhouette, easy dresses and shoes with a pop. I top it off with liquid confidence in the form of a perfume that makes me feel a little saucy.

Denim jacket: I can wear a denim jacket year around with Southern California weather. This is a category where you can spend a little more money because they never go out of style. I think of them as an instant upgrade, and have for the last dozen or so years. Jackets are always a wonderful investment piece. I know that the trend is oversized, but that just doesn’t appeal to me for the purpose of looking pulled together. Go fitted and a little cropped if you’re petite. It makes them easier to wear over a dress.

Trench coat: This name makes me laugh. What the name conjures in my imagination is probably what yours does too, but the style is so good. Again, an oversized one is very on trend right now, but a classic fit trench coat will slim your figure to your advantage. I go back and forth on belted vs. unbelted, but that’s up to you. I love London Fog. It has just the right weight for California weather. A classic style will last you forever. Get a basic, then add fun prints or bold colors. I may or may not be a coat collector….

Jeans with stretch: Go for a slight boot cut paired under the trench to maximize the silhouette. Boot cut or straight is a more flattering silhouette than a skinny jean if you’re trying to fudge weight loss. Go with whatever makes you feel best, but here are a few options if you want inspiration. Side note, you know the thing you swore you’d never do, but then embrace? For me, that is NYDJ. I always thought they were matronly, but the high, super stretchy fabric really does look good in their black jean. ALWAYS be picky about the wash. Obvious whiskering is icky, dirty washes are worse. Good American is a brand that has great stretch. If you just can’t embrace stretchy jeans, here is where you can go oversized. The higher the rise, the better. Featured below, AG Alexxis, NYDJ Marilyn and Good American.

Stretchy pants: My favorite, absolute favorite place for stretchy, polished pants is Athleta. The cosmic crop or pant (which is way cuter than the picture on their site) is on clearance. They are so easily dressed up or down and I wear navy in winter with a sable, suede tall boot. The Brooklyn pant comes in a few different styles and is a pant I wear over and over throughout the week. All In Motion from Target offers fantastic Athleta knock offs.

All In Motion from http://www.target.com. It’s a dupe of an Athleta pant for 1/3 of the cost.

Easy dresses: I have found that Amazon has fantastic options if you’re brave enough to try without trying on first. I follow the reviews religiously and sort them based on height and weight. I like a looser dress and add my denim jacket over to give it a more defined shape.

Shoes with a pop: I am a total sucker for shoes. They can make a boring outfit fun. These clogs from Charlotte Stone have made me want to leave the house for any reason I can conjure, just so I can wear them. If you sign up for their emails, you receive an offer for $40 off. They are surprisingly comfortable and run just a tad big….maybe to make up for a lack of half sizes.

Liquid confidence: Perfume makes you feel better. It can’t take away the weight gain, but it can let you embrace those womanly curves. My grandmother had a silver tray covered with beautiful perfume bottles. I always looked forward to visiting her and sitting at her vanity and smelling them one by one. Scent is instant glamour to me. I have found 2 that I love over the last year. My husband says one of them smells like church. I say that makes me holy….

Le Labo, AnOther 13. I really like the size options to manage price points. If floral is more your style, Le Labo Fleur d’Oranger 27 is stunning.

If you are still homebound or without many options for sniffing, www.luckyscent.com is a site where you can get lost in fragrance heaven. You are able to purchase samples to try before committing to a full bottle.

I had fun while gaining weight over the last year. I don’t regret eating cookie dough and watching Harry Potter with my little boys. I don’t regret running, even with a fall. Being outside was an indulgence. I don’t regret drinking wine and laughing way too late at night with my husband. This last year emphasized the need to cherish the little moments. Now, it’s time to shed the fear, hopefully the pounds and embrace leaving the house to resume life in a world that is still a little bit different.

The Dress That Launched 1000 Ships

There are two things my husband regularly requests of me:

  1. Please wear something short and tight.
  2. Please consider dyeing my hair so black that it has purple undertones.

In reference to the latter, I keep trying to explain that a pasty white girl cannot pull that one off without looking deathly ill.  He is not buying it.  As far as short and tight goes, it just isn’t comfortable, but I am working on it.  Enter Diane Von Furstenberg.  Every woman should have a go to brand that you know will work in a crunch.  My crunch is that the tiny one and I flew to Omaha much earlier than anticipated and I am completely unprepared for the big, upcoming reunion.  I have ordered several dresses to try, and one of them is a DVF because I know it will fit.  It is my ‘sure thing’, my bff of the closet.  Diane Von Furstenberg is known for her sexy and feminine wrap dresses, and her impeccable taste in prints.  She is the queen of femininity, in my book, and my heart beats a little faster when I see new collections.  She manages to bridge the worlds of super trend and timelessness.  I have little loyalty to most things in my closet, but I horde my pieces by her.

My dress arrived today, and true to form, it is an incredible fit.   I looked in the mirror and grinned.  It manages to be proper and racy in one dress.  Like a mullet, it’s business up front and a party in the back.  It hugs curves like a race car and is just as exciting.  My mind is relieved.  I know I’ve got a dress that makes me feel comfortable, but is as tight as second skin for my husband.  Life is about compromises.  In this situation, this compromise is definitely a win-win.

Here is the dress.  It’s offered in 2 colors.  Nordstrom has the purple on sale.  Saks has both colors at full price, but really fast shipping!

Your Summer Wardrobe Saver

I am regularly convinced when I am in wardrobe crisis mode that I will open my closet and something perfect that I have never seen before will be casually lounging on my closet door, waiting for me. This has yet to happen, but I still fervently believe it will. The closest I have come to this coming true is when I pulled out my skinny clothes that were in storage and found items I had forgotten I owned. While I am waiting for my wardrobe Prince Charming to appear, I can always count on a dress to do the job for me. Women who do not wear dresses are missing out. I believe a great, casual dress is the singularly most important piece you can own for summer. A dress multitasks like your boss on Starbucks. As I write this, I am wearing an animal print jersey dress that is hiding the fact that I am beyond tired due to insomnia not induced by the tiny one. It is allowing me to be dressed for the day, but the jersey fabric feels like the pajamas I wore less than an hour ago.
The perfect dress is a jersey fabrication or extremely soft woven. It is not form fitting, but follows the line of your body. The simple silhouette guarantees years of wear in style. It hits right above your knee, or right below. You should be able to easily dress it up or wear it casually. It should be a second skin for whatever occasion you need it.

Here are some that I recommend:
